Tyler Gregory Okonma, known professionally as Tyler, the Creator, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, fashion designer, director, and actor. Born on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, California, he has been a defining figure in alternative hip-hop during the 2010s and 2020s. He co-founded the music collective Odd Future in 2007, which became a significant force in shaping underground and alternative hip-hop culture. Within the group,
he served as a rapper, producer, director, and actor, and he also performed on the group's sketch comedy show Loiter Squad (2012–2014).
Tyler launched his solo career with the self-released debut album Bastard in 2009, followed by Goblin in 2011, which brought him mainstream attention due to the viral success of the single "Yonkers" and its accompanying music video. His early work was often associated with horrorcore due to its dark and transgressive themes, though he rejected the label. After Wolf (2013), he transitioned toward more accessible sounds incorporating jazz, soul, and R&B, marking a significant evolution in his artistry.
His albums Flower Boy (2017), Igor (2019), and Call Me If You Get Lost (2021) earned widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, with the latter two winning Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards in 2020 and 2022, respectively. His subsequent albums, Chromakopia (2024) and Don’t Tap the Glass (2025), both debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, with Chromakopia achieving the highest first-week sales of his career.
Beyond music, Tyler is the founder of the fashion brands Golf Wang and Le Fleur, which have collaborated with major labels like Lacoste, Converse, and Louis Vuitton. He also founded the annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival music festival, which has featured artists such as Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Billie Eilish. He has directed all of his music and promotional videos under the pseudonym "Wolf Haley" and made his feature film debut in 2025 as Wally in Marty Supreme, under his birth name.
Tyler has won multiple awards, including two Grammy Awards, a BRIT Award, and a MTV Video Music Award, and was named "Music Innovator of the Year" by The Wall Street Journal in 2019. He has also explored animation, voicing a character in the Adult Swim series The Jellies! (2017), and has expressed interest in directing films. His work reflects a multidisciplinary creative vision that spans music, fashion, visual art, and curated experiences.
